Show jumping is an Olympic equestrian sport that involves jumping obstacles on horseback on a special course. Equestrian competitions originated in the 18th century and are now one of the most popular sports in the world.
The main task of a rider in show jumping is to complete the course:
- Correct. The horse must complete a given course and jump over each obstacle.
- Clean. No “tumbles,” meaning no obstacles were destroyed.
- Fast. Participants are given a set amount of time to complete each hurdle. The rider’s goal is not only to complete the hurdle within the allotted time but also to achieve the best possible result.
Every rule violation in show jumping is punishable by one of two methods: penalty points or disqualification. If a horse accidentally overshoots an obstacle or exceeds the time limit, the competitor is penalized. In more serious situations, such as when a horse unseats its rider, the competitor is disqualified.
Unlike equestrian competitions and tournaments, dressage is considered the most elegant form of equestrian sport. But in reality, dressage is a very engaging event, where riders can demonstrate all their grace and horsemanship. While equestrian competitions are somewhat secrecy-filled, with riders learning about the obstacles only shortly before the event, dressage tasks are known to competitors well in advance. This gives them ample time to master all the elements of riding. However, it’s not just the quality of their execution that is judged, but also the rhythm of the movements, the suppleness and flexibility of the horse, and the rider’s ability to connect with the animal.
